Sangeang Island

Active volcano island in the Flores Sea.

Sangeang Api is an active island volcano in Eastern Indonesia.  It’s a unique place the size of a major city…with less than 100 people living permanently on the island, which is dominated by a double-peak volcano towering almost 2000 meters above the surrounding tropical seas.  One of the peaks is dormant, the other includes at its top the active crater which in recent times has usually been erupting up to multiple times per hour.  These eruptions can be watched from a safe distance away on the dormant peak or surrounding areas.  Seeing – and hearing – a volcanic eruption is an awesome experience of the force of nature that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Climbing Sangeang Api

The unforgettable experience of climbing an active volcano.

Climbing this active volcano is an unforgettable experience – the trek, the company of the local guides, and of course the roars and explosions of the volcano.  Since its last major eruption in 2014, the volcano has been mostly acitve with regular, small but powerful explosions that can be heard from the beach 8 kilometers away from the crater.  From the beach, the trek up the mountain takes around 8-10 hours depending on pace and breaks to enjoy the scenery along the way.

Once setting up camp near the saddle between the active and dormat peaks, the unique topography of the double-peak and an active crater that is open to the side allows for excellent views onto the active lava dome with its regular explosions as well as the recent long and any active short lava flows down the flank from a safe distance.  Observations are especially rewarding during twilight and at night, when the glowing lava fragments provide a fantastic natural fireworks show.  This is why we recommend spending at least a night or two on the volcano – our guides provide water and basic hot meals to enjoy the show.

Travel to Sangeang

A journey by air, land, and sea.

Sangiang Village on “mainland” Sumbawa island is two hours by car from Bima airport if you’re coming by plane from Bali or Lombok, or a similar time from Sape harbor if you’re coming from Flores by ferry.  The remainder of the trip to Sangeang island is by boat and takes one to two hours from Sangiang Village.  The passage itself usually affords the first views of the volcanic peak with its regular explosions, looking like puffs of ash from the distance.  It’s usually best to spend the first night on the black sand beach before starting to head up the mountain at first light in the morning.
